Lionel Tertis, CBE (29 December Lionel Tertis, CBE (29 December – 22 February ) was an English violist. He was one of the first viola players to achieve international fame, and a noted teacher.
Initially a violinist studying Lionel Tertis was a key figure in establishing the viola as a solo instrument, greatly expanding its repertoire and prominence. Born in West Hartlepool to Polish-Jewish parents, he began his studies on the violin before leaving home at the age of thirteen, paying for his own musical education through money.
